As I see it, Archives keep us in touch with narratives we are likely to need. They help us remember for the sake of the future that can't yet know what it will need. This website is an Archive, a place where items are stored in case they may be of help to someone. In the Christian community "remembering" is part of every prayer, praise, meal, blessing, act of service. For Lutherans, and others, the central move of the Eucharistic meal is a remembering called the anamnesis: remembering the mighty acts of God, doing what we were asked to do in memory of the night in which Jesus was betrayed, eating and drinking the meal that remembers and re-members us to life by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Lutheran tradition values functional, thoughtful, history keeping too. Professional and congregational Archivists and Historians do important though often undervalued work. It is my aim to be in partnership with anyone of any age interested in the purposeful preservation and resurrection of stories that give life. Archives and Special Collections Collecting PolicyMissionThe Laurier Archives strives to be a vital, vibrant department that is central to the teaching, research and community engagement mission of the University and is a destination for scholars. We contribute to the long-term health of the university by ensuring that vital and historic records are collected, preserved and made available to the university community.Scope of the CollectionMaterial in Special Collections falls into three broad categories: the environmental conservation movement in Canada; the Lutheran Church in the community; and history of Waterloo Region. The Lutheran Church in the CommunityThe Laurier Archives holds the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Eastern Synod as well as the corporate records of the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary at Wilfrid Laurier University. The collection also includes personal papers of faculty and students of the Seminary. Research LevelAt the research level, Laurier Archives and Special Collections seeks to establish or consolidate a collection that will support doctoral and other original research. In these areas, the Special Collections Department strives to maintain an excellent, but not exhaustive collection. Collections considered for inclusion will be made up primarily of unique, unpublished material. Collections consisting primarily of published documents will not typically be collected. History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Eastern SynodPersonal papers prominent Waterloo Region residents and organizational records of community groups will be collected very selectively. Collections requested by faculty members to support teaching will be considered for acquisition based on extent, format, and condition. Special Collections will not acquire collections that fit the collecting focus of other Waterloo-area archival repositories. 2. Rare Books Collecting PolicyResearch LevelAt the research level, the Laurier Archives seeks to establish or consolidate a collection that will support doctoral and other original research. In these areas, the Laurier Archives strives to maintain an excellent, but not exhaustive collection. Lutheranism in CanadaThe Laurier Archives will collect exhaustively the official publications of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (Eastern Synod). The Laurier Archives will also collect major publications of the other synods in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada as well as publications of the Lutheran Church in Canada. The Laurier Archives will collect books about Lutheran denominations in Canada that are published by scholarly, religious or trade publishers. Congregational Song in CanadaThe Laurier Archives seeks to establish an extensive collection of Lutheran and Canadian hymnals including hymnals with or without music or with tunes indicated. The primary emphases will be on:· Music used in worship of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and its predecessors· North American Lutheran hymnals and music· Hymnals from any denomination published in Canada Church music published in Waterloo

In my view Archives are not about collections of "stuff" from the past as much as they are about preserving the stories linked to the material things that can be purposefully treasured. This website was started as an early effort in digital Archiving, particularly for the preservation of hyperlink content and digital only photos. It is a place where online items are stored in case they may be of help to someone. The effort began in 2009

The ELCIC consists of five Synods, each of which has an independent relationship for the storage, preservation, enlivenment of the stories of the congregations, people and organization of that Synod.
